I have over thirty years of experience as a psychotherapist and I am as excited and passionate now as the day I started. I focus on working in depth with those that have experienced trauma, sexual abuse, and eating disorders. I believe most individuals come for counseling/psychotherapy to make changes, but do not know how. I see my responsibility is to give guidance and tools to help facilitate that change.
My approach is based on body-centered gestalt therapy and constructed out of the Hartford Family Institute philosophy. Often I will ask, “How do you feel about that?” “Take a breath, where do you feel it?” “What does that feel like?” These questions help us dive deep within our bodies to find the feelings within. Gestalt therapy focuses not just on the mind, but the whole body. It is about changing your perspective of the world and yourself. It helps you look into your past so that you can see how it affects your present and move on to the future. One of my favorite quotes by Wayne W. Dyer says it all, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
I have spent many years working with those who have experienced various forms of trauma in their lives and who now have alcohol addiction, eating disorders, obesity and food addiction. This includes people with binge eating, body dysmorphia, diabetes, MS and teens with eating disorders and body image issues. I feel connected with those that experience food addiction and eating disorders because I myself have had a tumultuous relationship with food. It is through my own process that I can connect with those with eating disorders and be a better guide through the healing process.
You are the one that creates the change, but I am here to give you the strength and support needed. I help you take risks and heal the source of your trauma. I see and honor the resistance that will happen throughout the process and can sit in silence when the process calls for it, or ask gentle questions to help you look deeper. When the outcome is finally reached there is nothing more thrilling and exciting. I cherish being part of the adventure and witnessing the healing transpire.
Specialization
My experience began in 1979, as a child and family therapist and parent educator at The Children’s Place, where I specialized in six month to six year-old children. In 1982 I transferred to the Johnson County Mental Health Center as an outpatient therapist working with children and adults offering individual and family therapy. Many of the children and adults I worked with had a wide range of mental illnesses, including anxiety, depression, life loss and trauma. In 1985, I joined Counseling and Human Relations LLC where I have continued to work as a psychotherapist with women, men, teenagers, children, and couples who have suffered trauma, eating disorders, sexual abuse, alcohol and food addiction.
Through my years as a counselor I also have gained experience working with LGBTQ adults and teens, couples, and families. My expertise and understanding allows me to counsel those with relationship issues, children of LGBTQ parents, and lesbian and gay couples. Through the sessions I help couples and families have better communication, work through day-to-day issues, and achieve healing and growth. My sessions help transition occur within each individual, and for the couple and family as a whole.
I myself have found healing from within nature. It has helped feed my body and soul. It is a possibility to conduct our sessions while hiking. Being outside and moving your body can help promote wellness body, mind, and soul.
